  • Exposición de pintura "X África" Marisa Galarza

              ¿Cuándo?/ When? 15 abril 2013- 27 abril 2013 (All Day
             ¿Dónde?/Where? Espacio Canarias 7

Marisa Galarza (local artist) brings Africa closer to us. Through a variety of different animals, people, and plants, she manages to turn the showroom into a safari through Africa. She uses wide range of techniques to develop her paintings, achieving some extraordinary textures. One of the things that caught my attention in this exhibition, was how she uses the colours and titles to express hidden messages behind each animal.

Octavio Esteva is a local artista (Gran Canaria). Inspired by Yolanda Graziani and influenced by Cesar Manrrique, his abstract paintings express inexpressible feelings.  I loved this exposition because as they are abstract when you look at them your subconscious interpret hidden messages; so half of what you see in the paintings comes from the paintings itself and the other half from each individual´s mind.

I went to see his exhibition and had the opportunity of talking to him. He explained he paints everyday since three years ago. He started painting because his sister-in-law, gave him a box with oil paints for christmas.

Photography

There are things that we see day after day and do not notice until we see them in a photography and analyze them detailed. This photograph where an elderly woman appears feeding a few doves. I did this photograph with the intention of reflecting these small details that we overlook often and don´t notice well in ours sourroundings.

This this photograph is cropted in an elongated form, I did this because this way it gives it more perspective, the flight of the doves is reflected better in this horizontal form.

oil+water
To make the water colour more bluish, I used blue water colour. I then started dropping oil and taking photographs. I took a serie of photographs experimenting with this technique. My propose was to investigate "motion". I didn´t use any artificial light for this photographs.

collage photograph

This photograph is from a working class neighborhood in Las Palmas (Canary Islands). I made this collage because I think it represents chaos. At first glance, it seems that all the buildings are well placed, but if you look better you will see that there are parts of buildings missing and parts that do not fit.

With photo I wanted to represent freedom. This girl is jumping on top of a mountain, with the city is below.

Another example of macro where i was looking closely at the detail in the texture of the objects.

I did these photographs for a project that I was doing on "teenagers".
I Investigated and analyzed several fields of this topic, and  the inspiration came to do these photos. These photos reflect the depressive and unconformist side of some teenagers. The patterns are:
 A tear, which expresses sadness,
an arch in the forehead, which reflects all the things that we still have to learn
and a line labyrinth, showing the indesicion and the worries.

These photos have been taken next to a window where it was entering natural light. Wait to the late afternoon since this week the light was wonderful to extract photographs

Acrylic paint + ink + water colours

I researched an anonimous artist that uses this style of paintings. I found it really interesting , since its a different technique we are used to. I painted the background with water colours, I then did a print with the face using black ink  (to make sure I knew how to make good printings, I had to research on prints and wood cuts, and make a few practice before doing this one). When this was dry, I painted the patterns with acrylic paint following a simmilar way in which this anonimous artist did his.

Sculpture

 32cm

I was inspired to make this wire sculpture with a project I did on facial expressions. I researched artists that did wire sculptures ( such as Phill Evans) and got ideas from their works.

75cm of length

I made this lizard with a wire skeleton, which I the wrap in plaster. I used metalic paint to make it look as a metal sculpture. I looked at local artists (such as Cesar Manrrique and Ana Luisa Benitez) that make sculptures about canarian objects, peoples and animals. I got in contact with one of them and was able to go to her own studio where she showed me how she did her sculptures. I the had the idea of making this lizard and the painting it in metalic colours to mimic her sculptures.

I made this sculpture by cutting lines out of an old book. I got the inspiration from artist ( for example: Brian Dettmer).

Oil Paints

This apple is a still life with my interpretation in the colors and in the textures.

Knife used for textures in the foreground to create a sense of depth.
Warm colours create a diagonal line from the bottom left corner, to the top right corner. I did this with the intention of making the eye incontiously look at all the painting. I didn´t look at any artist for inspiration in this piece, I allowed my subconciente guide me where to put every colour and to do every texture. For this reason this is one of the paintings that expresses best my feelings, since I did it without analyzing in detail the technique.

New York

100x60
I got inspired on this painting by Debra Hurd and her " NY street" paintings. It is a geometric painting, since what I want to make obvious are the colors that I use. I don´t have a selection of any specific colors. I decided to do the black background in order that this way the colors stand out more.

This painting is a still life. I decided to make it in sepia tones to experiment this technique. I used the paint really dry to creat the efect of the shoe being old.
